Hello: Could someone please tell me how to clear a very slow draining dishwasher? I tried to take the centre element off but was unable to do so. Are there any non-toxic dishwasher drain cleaners on the market?... or, other suggestions?

Thank you,

A couple of things could be happening.

The hose that connects the drain to the sink (at least that's the way it's connected on mine) could be stopped up. If that's the case, you can disconnect that hose and make sure it's clear.

The other thing that might be happening is the hose could be collapsing as it drains. This might happen if it gets kinked. The surges in water pressure can jostle the hose around a bit. Unkinking the hose may do the trick.

It really helps if you can find a service manual on the web so you can take the thing apart and clean it... but we once had a repairman fix ours with citric acid in powder form, and very hot water. Citric acid is what you find in oranges and lemons and is relatively safe and nontoxic (but you shouldn't eat it; as with many substances, toxicity depends on dosage).
