Moved into a house with a fireplace. There is a knob on the outside for the flue that I can move, but the way the furnace is built, I can't see flue itself so I don't know which way is open or closed.

Sometimes you can put a candle near the fireplace, just on the outside of it and if the flue is open, the air being drawn up the chimney makes the smoke go up the chimney, rather than straight.

What if moving the knob doesn't seem to have any effect one way or the other? I guess it could be blocked. – stevex Oct 19 at 0:25

Try burning some cardboard in the fireplace, just a bit (a handful; don't make a bonfire). This will help get the air moving; then you can move that knob and see if there is any difference.

Our fireplace doesn't have a flue, but it does have an air intake vent at the front that you can open and close. The fireplace is always open to the chimney, but air coming in from the front is controlled by this vent.
